What is the SMARTgirl Network?

The SMARTgirl network is a health and social network for entertainment workers. It has around 11,000 members in nine provinces/cities around Cambodia. The members have elected five representatives in Phnom Penh and in the provinces.

The goal of the network is to draw support, improve work conditions, build capacity, and stimulate dialogue between members and relevant institutions/stakeholders in order to bring about improved health through better access to health services.

In 2008, the network became a member of the PST/OP group organized by the national technical working group for outreach work/peer education and the 100% Condom-Use Program.

The SMARTgirl central network committee plays an important role in supporting the women who work as entertainment workers in ten target provinces. They work to raise awareness of health problems, instill dignity, and increase knowledge related to HIV and STIs, which continue to be a major concern for the country.
The SMARTgirl network committee’s main duties, however, still revolve around providing information and education to entertainment workers and referring them to health services.
